"As far as I'm concerned, being any gender is a drag."- Patti Smith, "Godmother of Punk"

Hello! I'm Maddie MacWilliams. In June 2011, I graduated from Newton North High School. Senior Year Project allowed me to connect my growing interest in gender and sexism with my love of music. With this wikispaces website, I get to share what I've done with you - I hope you have fun checking it out!

You can watch my formal presentation here (and a live performance of my song "A Girl"):
The Paper -
One-sentence summary: Analyzing how the portrayal of women rock musicians in the media affects our perceptions of them, with a focus on Riot Grrrl, a feminist punk movement that strongly responded to this portrayal.

The best part of my research? I interviewed three local musicians (a drummer, a singer, and a guitarist-singer) about their experiences with gender in the music industry. You can read or watch the full interviews for some incredible insight.

The Project - I recorded eight original songs on guitar, drums, and vocals for in a professional studio. I made the album art and the lyrics booklet. My CD, called No Time, No Matter, is completed! I'll set up something to distribute it online, but for now email me if you want to buy it. Proceeds from the sale of the CD will go to Boston Mobilization, a nonprofit organization I am involved in that teaches teens about social justice issues and empowers us to make change in our own communities.
